CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the attempted kidnapping and murder of a pregnant woman in Summerville.

Berkeley County deputies tell local media outlets they were called Thursday after a report that an eight-month pregnant woman unloading her groceries was approached with another woman with a handgun.

Authorities say 44-year-old Julie Gookins allegedly pointed the gun at the woman’s stomach and ordered her into her own backyard.

The pregnant woman claimed Gookins threated to kidnap and kill her, then take her baby out of her. The woman said she disarmed Gookins and threw the gun into a pond. A neighbor held Gookins down until authorities arrived.

Gookins faces charges including kidnapping and attempted murder. Bond has been denied, and it wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney.
