ORANGBURG, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a 74-year-old Holly Hill man shot another man in the leg after he asked him for 27 cents.

Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said in a news release that John Elmore has been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature after the shooting at his neighbor’s home Saturday afternoon.

Ravenell says the 35-year-old victim asked Elmore for 27 cents, and Elmore got angry, went to his house, grabbed a shotgun and fired, hitting the victim in the lower leg.

Deputies did not say why the victim asked for the money or Elmore got so mad at the request.

Elmore’s bond was set at $7,500. A phone listing for him was busy, and police records did not indicate if he had a lawyer.
