ALDERSON, W.Va. (AP) - Alderson police say the death of a 2-year-old boy found in an underground tank appears to be an accident.

Police told media outlets at a Wednesday news conference that investigators believe the boy fell into the tank.

Police Chief Jeremy Bennett says the tank’s cover was partially open. Foul play isn’t suspected.

The tank is located behind a gas station with an attached car wash. It’s used to store grease waste.

Police say the boy was playing by the tank on Tuesday while his mother washed her car. She reported him missing after realizing that he was gone.

Searchers found the boy in the tank. He was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to an area hospital.

The investigation is continuing.
