KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) - Authorities hunting for a convicted murderer say he somehow escaped from his cell in eastern Illinois, hid inside the jail and then beat a guard into unconsciousness.

Kankakee County Sheriff Timothy Bukowski says that besides finding 23-year-old Kamron T. Taylor, investigators are also trying to learn how he was able to get out of his cell, overpower the guard and take his keys, uniform and SUV.

Taylor escaped from the Jerome Combs Detention Center at about 3 a.m. Wednesday.

Authorities didn’t learn of the escape until about 30 minutes later when jail staff found the wounded officer, who is hospitalized in intensive care.

Bukowski says by wearing the guard’s uniform, Taylor was able to fool other guards in a master control room who opened three sets of doors for him.
