LACEY, Wash. (AP) - The Thurston County sheriff’s office says a 4-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with severe injuries after the family’s 102-pound American bulldog bit him in the face.

Lt. Cliff Ziesemer says the dog also bit the boy’s 26-year-old mother in the hand when she tried to pull the animal off her child.

Ziesemer says the boy’s injuries are not considered life threatening.

The boy was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Wednesday.

The officer says the mother gave up ownership of the 1 ½-year-old dog to animal control.
