ANNANDALE, Va. (AP) - During the hours after a prisoner escaped custody at a northern Virginia hospital, police say he drove around in two carjacked cars.

But a homeowner tells WRC-TV (https://bit.ly/1HgVYar ) that Wossen Assaye drove one of those cars into the garage of an Annandale home, then broke in.

Lorraine Giovinazzo says Assaye apparently entered the almost-empty house by jimmying the handles on a set of glass doors. She says she’s grateful that she had just moved because her mother would have been home by herself at the time.

Giovinazzo says he left behind the hospital gown and took some old clothes.

Fairfax County police declined to comment, saying they plan to release a statement on the escape later Wednesday.
