ANAMOSA, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a female inmate has died after being found unconscious in an Iowa jail hours after her arrest.

The Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation said Wednesday that the death of 41-year-old Tana Lekin remains under investigation. Lekin was found unconscious around 10:30 a.m. on March 21 in her cell at Jones County Jail. Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful and she was later pronounced dead.

The Jones County Sheriff’s Office says Lekin had been arrested earlier that morning on several charges, including second-degree burglary and public intoxication.

An autopsy conducted March 22 revealed the cause of her death was asphyxiation from an article of clothing. Authorities say Lekin was found alone in her cell.

A toxicology report isn’t expected to be released for several weeks.
