WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A man is facing an attempted murder charge for shooting and wounding a West Columbia police officer.

The State Law Enforcement Division said Wednesday 51-year-old William Lee Kernan also faces charges of resisting arrest and weapons possession.

Officers say they were trying to serve two warrants on Kernan on Tuesday when he refused to let them in his house, so they forced their way inside. While officers were trying to arrest Kernan, police say he fired a 12-gauge shotgun, shooting Officer James Holland in the head.

A judge on Wednesday denied bond for Kernan, and it wasn’t known if he had an attorney. Local media outlets report Holland was able to walk away from the home on his own and is expected to recover.
