VIRGINIA, Minn. (AP) - A Babbitt man has pleaded guilty to killing his mother’s boyfriend last year.

St. Louis County Attorney Mark Rubin says 26-year-old Shawn Doherty pleaded guilty Wednesday to intentional second-degree murder.

Doherty admitted that he killed 55-year-old Paul Bulen of Mahtomedi (mah-toh-MEE’-dye) at the home of Doherty’s mother in Babbitt on Jan. 13, 2014.

Bulen was strangled. He was found unconscious outside the home dressed only in underwear and a T-shirt, and was later pronounced dead.

According to court documents, Doherty told his mother he thought her boyfriend was coming between them.

Under the plea agreement, Doherty would be sentenced to 27 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for May 7.
