NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - An Essex County sheriff’s officer accused of sexually assaulting a woman continues to maintain his innocence.

NJ.com (https://bit.ly/1ajzr2F) reports that Dinis Oliveira pleaded not guilty Wednesday to sexual assault, official misconduct and criminal coercion charges.

Essex County prosecutors says a 31-year-old woman called Newark police in late February to say she had been sexually assaulted by a man who identified himself as a law enforcement officer. She said the man used his badge and a handgun to intimidate her, and they then engaged in sexual acts.

The woman reported the alleged incident two days later.

Oliveira has been a sheriff’s office since June. He was suspended without pay after the charges were filed, and he remains free on $200,000 bail.
