SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert has vetoed a controversial bill to name a section of Utah’s Veterans’ Memorial Highway after late state House Speaker Rebecca Lockhart.

The Republican governor’s office announced Wednesday afternoon that Herbert vetoed the measure at the request of Lockhart’s family.

A group of Vietnam veterans protested the proposal on Monday, arguing that Lockhart’s name should not be added to part of a section of Interstate 15 in Utah County because she was not a veteran.

Lockhart died of a rare brain disease on Jan. 17, less than three weeks after leaving office. She was 46.

Herbert says he’s disappointed by the controversy but vetoed the bill to honor the family’s wishes.
