ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. (AP) - Vermont state police say a 19-year-old man is in custody after leading them on a 40-mile, high-speed chase while driving a stolen car.

Authorities say they attempted to stop Jesse Sawyer of Charleston, Vermont for speeding on Interstate 91 northbound at about 12:30 Wednesday afternoon, but he refused to stop.

Police pursued him from Lyndonville to Newport before police disabled his vehicle in Newport. Authorities say the 2012 Toyota Tundra he was driving had been stolen from St. J. Auto in St. Johnsbury.

Sawyer is being held on $3,000 bail, pending a court appearance Thursday.

He is charged with attempting to elude police, carless and negligent operation, aggravated assault and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

It was not immediately known if he has a lawyer.
