INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Leaders of the Indy Eleven soccer team say they’re pleased with a plan advancing in the state Legislature for a $20 million renovation of their home field at the IUPUI track stadium.

The state Senate voted 46-3 Thursday in favor of the project that would add about 8,000 seats to the 10,000-seat Carroll Stadium on the downtown Indianapolis campus.

Senators scaled back a House-backed plan for government help on the team’s proposal for an $82 million, 18,500-seat downtown stadium. Both plans would use sales and ticket taxes from stadium events toward paying off construction loans.

The new stadium proposal faced doubts since the soccer team has played only one season.

The House and Senate must still agree on a final version of the proposal.
