PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A study says home foreclosures were up last year in Rhode Island.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1ae2rIa ) that a study due to be released Friday by a research group at Roger Williams University says 398 foreclosure deeds were filed in the last three months of 2014, up 30 percent from the same period in 2013.

For 2014, 1,645 foreclosures were filed in Rhode Island, up 10 percent over the previous year.

Foreclosure deed information was compiled by The Warren Group, a real-estate data company in Massachusetts.

A portion of the increase in completed foreclosures could be related to cases resolved by the U.S. District Court’s foreclosure mediation program.

The report also says nearly 16 percent of Rhode Island homeowners owe more in their mortgages than their homes are worth.
