A private research university just north of Albany, New York, has postponed its scheduled showing of “American Sniper” to provide for further discussion following protests from the school’s Muslim Students Association.

The student-run movie theater at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy will be showing “The Theory of Everything” instead of the Oscar-nominated Chris Kyle biopic, which will be shown at a later date in the semester and held alongside an “educational forum,” Campus Reform reported.

“We realized that this movie has caused heightened tension across communities and college campuses nationwide, including violent actions and even murders,” the Union Programs and Activities Committee Cinema (UPAC) claimed on its Facebook page, without elaborating further on what “murders” the film was supposed to have caused.

One student responded with an online petition demanding the movie be shown and accusing UPAC of censorship, a charge the group denies.

“Censorship is an attempt to bring a subject out of focus; our action is an attempt to bring strong issues into greater focus,” UPAC said on Facebook. “We want to hold an educational event that invites members from MSA, the Student Veterans of America, and any other organizations that could take interest in this film to lead a discussion open to all RPI students and faculty members. This will be coupled with the showing of American Sniper later this semester or early next semester.”

The University of Michigan sparked conservative ire last week for canceling a planned showing of “American Sniper” after the school’s Middle Eastern and North Africa and Muslim Students’ Association condemned the film as racist and sympathetic to mass murderers. Following national backlash, the university reinstated the showing along with a discussion, Campus Reform reported.
