HUGO, Minn. (AP) - Crews were able to keep a wildfire away from homes and an elementary school in the Twin Cities.
The fire on Thursday threatened the Oneka Elementary School in Hugo. The fire nearly reached a main entrance of the school.
A Washington County dispatcher tells KARE-TV (https://kare11.tv/1aC2EFk ) the fire came less than 100 feet from one home.
Fire crews from Hugo, Forest Lake and White Bear Lake as well as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources fought the blaze and were able to extinguish it shortly after 2 p.m.
The fire came just hours after the DNR issued an update on the worsening wildfire conditions across Minnesota. Officials say DNR fire crews have already responded to twice as many wildfire calls this spring as they did all last year.
