WILSON, N.C. (AP) - School administrators in Wilson County are providing counselors to students and staff after an 11-year-old middle-school student was hit and killed while crossing a road.

Local media outlets report Julia Manuel was a sixth grader at Springfield Middle School and was killed when she was hit by a pickup truck.

The N.C. Highway Patrol reported that the girl was trying to cross the road to check the mail Wednesday when the pickup truck crested a hill. Investigators said Manuel was in the same lane as the truck and that the driver tried to swerve and avoid her.

The patrol said the driver was observing the speed limit, and that neither alcohol nor drugs were involved.

No charges have been filed.
