MANTEO, N.C. (AP) - Traffic crossing the Alligator River Bridge on U.S. 64 will be stopped intermittently in both directions so crews can work on the span.

The N.C. Department of Transportation says traffic will be stopped multiple times on Thursday for no more than 30 minutes each time.

Inspection crews will be doing work such as taking measurements of the swing span. Because the work depends on the wind, there’s no exact schedule for traffic stops.

On March 19, a malfunction on a gear for the swing span forced the department to close the bridge to boat traffic. The bridge reopened to boat traffic the next day, thanks to temporary repairs.

The bridge will be fixed permanently later this year, and DOT says the measurements being taken Thursday will aid in that repair.
