LEONI TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a woman and her two young grandchildren children have died in a fire at a home in Jackson County.

Blackman-Leoni Public Safety Director Mike Jester identified the victims Thursday as 57-year-old Julie Ann Earl, 4-year-old Mason Sancoucie and 9-month-old Morgan Tello.

Jester says a man passing by reported the fire about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday. The home is in Leoni Township, northeast of Jackson.

Jester says a 6-year-old girl who escaped told the passer-by that her grandmother and brothers were still inside.

Jester says firefighters tried to search the home but had to leave when it became unstable. He says the roof soon collapsed.

Jester says the fire started in Earl’s bedroom in the basement. He says the fire doesn’t appear suspicious but the cause remains under investigation.
