PASSAIC, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have found a dead body submerged in water in the basement of a vacant building in northern New Jersey.

The Record reports (https://bit.ly/1NFfJug) that the body was removed from the building on Main Avenue in Passaic Thursday.

Passaic Det. Andy White says that a construction worker found the body and that the basement was filled with five feet of water. Investigators don’t know how long the body was there.

The body was taken to the Essex County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

White says it’s unclear how the basement was flooded, but that it may have been caused by broken pipes.

The building has been vacant for two decades. Plans from a developer to turn it into a medical arts complex have stalled.
