FORT BLISS, Texas (AP) - A Fort Bliss officer who served in Afghanistan has died at the West Texas post after a military vehicle backed over his cot as he slept.

Officials with the 1st Armored Division identified the victim as 27-year-old Capt. Jonathan F. Wynkoop of Maumee (maw-MEE’), Ohio.

Fort Bliss officials say Wynkoop died Tuesday morning after a mine-resistant all-terrain vehicle backed over his cot. The accident happened during the Iron Focus training exercises.

Military authorities are investigating the circumstances and factors surrounding the death.

Wynkoop was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, Division Artillery, 1st Armored Division.

He arrived at Fort Bliss in 2011 after training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He deployed to Afghanistan in 2013.

Wynkoop is survived by his wife and three children.
