VALLEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say they’re trying to figure out how a homemade explosive ended up at a dam along the Kalamazoo River.

Allegan County Undersheriff Frank Baker tells the Kalamazoo Gazette (https://bit.ly/19LVa1O ) Consumers Energy employees found a jug containing what appeared to be an accelerant with a firework taped to the side on March 20 among debris and ice being removed from an intake screen area.

The Michigan State Police bomb squad confirmed that the explosive was no longer dangerous.

Baker says it doesn’t appear that the explosive was intended as a threat to the dam, which is located in Valley Township. Baker says the jug may have floated down the river from elsewhere and it wasn’t known how long it might have been on the ice or in the water.
