WHITEFIELD, Maine (AP) - Police say a Whitefield, Maine, man with a history of mental illness was taken to a Massachusetts hospital after intentionally cutting off his hand with a table saw.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to a home on Tuesday night and found the man, who had cut his hand off at the wrist. They declined to identify the man. The sheriff’s office says the man resisted efforts to provide help before deputies were able to apply a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

The Kennebec Journal (https://bit.ly/1DzrH7U ) reports a helicopter took the man to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and he was later taken to a Boston-area hospital in an attempt to reattach the hand. The results aren’t yet known.
