PASCO, Wash. (AP) - Police in Pasco, Washington, say a man has died after the car he was driving was involved in a collision with a pickup truck driven by a man who had just fled from police.

The Tri-City Herald reports (https://is.gd/N61jhJ ) that police say the crash happened late Thursday afternoon, minutes after officers called off their pursuit of the pickup out of concern for public safety.

Police had tried to stop the pickup truck but the driver raced away. They followed for a few blocks.

They say the pickup driver, described as a man in his 20s, fled on foot after the crash. Police searched the area with dogs Thursday night.

It was not immediately clear why they tried to stop the truck.
