WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) - A New Hanover County sheriff’s deputy was injured after being dragged while trying to arrest a suspect who drove away.

The sheriff’s office told local media outlets that deputies recognized a suspect at a convenience store Tuesday night and approached the car where he was sitting inside.

Deputies said when an officer tried to open the door, the suspect drove off, dragging the deputy about 20 yards before wrecking in a nearby ditch.

The suspect then ran from the scene.

The deputy was treated at Cape Fear Hospital and released. The officer’s name has not been released.

Officers are still searching for the suspect.
