FLORENCE, Ariz. (AP) - A San Tan Valley man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son in 2013.

Pinal County prosecutors say 26-year-old James Sunderland was sentenced Thursday after a jury convicted him earlier of first-degree murder and child abuse.

The toddler’s 29-year-old mother was sentenced last year to 2 ½ years in prison and lifetime probation after pleading guilty to child abuse.

Prosecutors say Sunderland was babysitting the boy on May 31, 2013 when he told 911 dispatchers that the boy had seizure-like symptoms and was unresponsive.

The child was airlifted to a Phoenix hospital and later died.

Doctors noticed the boy had bruising all over his body and had massive brain swelling.

The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.
