UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - A woman who prosecutors say ran an illegal assisted living facility out of her apartment has been convicted of abusing elderly and disabled adults.

Thirty-three-year-old Zainab Kamara of Bladensburg was convicted on 29 counts, including abuse of a vulnerable adult, false imprisonment, kidnapping and theft, Thursday in Prince George’s County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say Kamara looked for people in hospitals, shelters and rehab facilities with nowhere else to go and promised to care for them at an assisted living facility she said she operated.

Authorities say once the adults were in her custody, she took them to her apartment, where there was no heat and little food.

Prosecutors say Kamara stole the victims’ cash and credit cards.

Kamara faces up to 176 years in prison at sentencing on May 8.
