OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) - The American aid worker killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan was a former professor at a state college in upstate New York.

Officials at the State University of New York at Oswego said in a statement Thursday that Warren Weinstein was a political science professor at the college in the 1970s. They say he left Oswego in 1979 to work overseas with U.S. Agency for International Development.

U.S. officials say the 73-year-old Weinstein, of Rockville, Maryland, was killed in January drone strikes against al-Qaida, which had kidnapped him from his home in Lahore, Pakistan, in 2011.

Also killed in the drone striker were an Italian hostage and two Americans who had leadership roles with al-Qaida.

SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley says Weinstein “devoted his life to making the world a better place.”
