CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Construction is underway on a major new hotel in Charleston’s historic district.

Bennett Hospitality broke ground Monday on a $100 million, eight-story luxury hotel on Marion Square.

The 200,000-square-foot hotel is going up at the site where the old Charleston County library building stood abandoned for years.

The new hotel will feature 185 guest rooms, a two-level restaurant overlooking the city, a rooftop bar, a spa, meeting space and a ballroom.

The developers say the project should create about 350 jobs and the new hotel is expected to open by the fall of 2017.
