THURMONT, Md. (AP) - Police in Thurmont say they’re classifying as a hate crime the BB gun shooting of two high school athletes as they ran down Main Street.
Police said Monday the incident occurred April 14 in the rural town of 6,400 about 50 miles northwest of Baltimore.
They say the female suspect, who hasn’t yet been charged, shot one of the youths in the cheek and the other in the ankle as they ran past her along with her brother. Police say she shouted a racial slur before shooting.
Police say one victim told investigators he was friends with the shooter, and that the slur was “accepted bantering” between them.
The Frederick News-Post first reported the incident. The newspaper reports that the victims are black and the alleged shooter is white.
