SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah father is suing Salt Lake County’s Unified Police Department, claiming that an officer driving a police truck hit and injured his 13-year-old daughter.
Father Allen Handy says in a lawsuit filed Monday that the officer was speeding and driving at night with his headlights off when he struck the girl near Olympus High School in January 2012.
The suit says the girl was crossing the road to talk to her father as the officer left after working security a basketball game.
Unified Police spokesman Justin Hoyal could not say whether the officer was on duty at the time. He declined comment on the suit.
The lawsuit says she was hospitalized with a broken pelvis, concussion and scrapes after the crash, and spent months recovering. It seeks unspecified damages.
