PRAIRIEVILLE, La. (AP) - Crews from three agencies searched Bayou Manchac on Tuesday for a man reported missing after his 12-foot boat sank Monday night near Prairieville.

Allen Fitzgerald, 24, of Prairieville was in the rear of the bateau - a flat-bottomed boat that’s pointed at each end - when it began taking on water, said Adam Einck, spokesman for the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ enforcement division.

The friend jumped into the water when the boat began to sink, and made it to a house where he called 911 about 9:15 p.m. Monday, Einck said.

He said the friend told investigators that Fitzgerald also knew how to swim, and neither he nor Fitzgerald wore a life jacket. The boat had a 6-horsepower motor.

Wildlife agents, Ascension Parish sheriff’s deputies and St. Amant firefighters searched for Fitzgerald from about 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., and resumed the search at daylight.

The accident occurred on Bayou Manchac about three to four miles upstream from the Amite River.
