WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. (AP) - A 66-year-old Vermont man facing a charge he shot and wounded a friend following an argument told police he was acting in self-defense.

Dennis Dundas of East Bethel pleaded not guilty Monday to a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm. He was released on bail.

Police say Dundas and 47-year-old Donald Giovanella were inside Dundas’ home Sunday when a dispute broke out, resulting in the shooting. Officers found Giovanella lying outside the home. A short time later, Dundas appeared in the doorway; officers said he refused repeated orders to surrender and had to be subdued with the help of an electronic stun gun.

The Valley News (https://bit.ly/1GsrWP8 ) reported court documents said the two were fighting over a bottle of brandy.

Giovanella underwent surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
