LOS ANGELES (AP) - A pregnant cow that was hoisted out of an overturned trailer on a Los Angeles freeway has died and the truck driver has been seriously injured.

The 30-foot trailer overturned around 11 a.m. Wednesday on westbound Interstate 210 near Sylmar. The pickup hauling it wound up on a freeway embankment.

In an hours-long effort, firefighters rescued three sheep and a dog and used a hydraulic boom to hoist two pregnant cows from the trailer.

However, Jay Weiner of the animal rescue service Gentle Barn Foundation tells KABC-TV (https://bit.ly/1EEl4Bl) that one cow had a badly broken leg and had to be euthanized.

The 72-year-old driver of the pickup was taken to a hospital in serious condition.

The crash is under investigation, but authorities say the truck had a flat tire.
