METROPOLIS, Ill. (AP) - Authorities are investigating after an armed man was fatally shot by a police officer in southern Illinois.

The Massac County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call about a suicidal man threatening to shoot himself at his rural home early Thursday afternoon. Deputies initially were unable to find the man, but the department received another call about an hour later involving a man with a gun at Pell Cemetery in Rosiclare.

The Southern Illinoisan (https://bit.ly/1CiBglU ) reports officers from several departments located the man and attempted to pull over his vehicle, but he refused and drop sticks were deployed.

The Illinois State Police says the man ignored commands to drop his gun and pointed it at an officer.

The State Police says a Metropolis officer shot and killed the man.
