LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder has ordered U.S. flags at the Michigan Capitol and all other state buildings to be lowered to half-staff following the death of former state Rep. Jim A. Plakas.

Flags will be lowered Friday in honor of the former state representative and mayor of Garden City. He died Monday at age 85.

Plakas was elected to the state House of Representatives in 2000 and served the 16th District for three terms. He also spent 17 years as a councilman for Garden City before becoming mayor.

A funeral service is scheduled for Friday morning at the Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Westland.
