BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A 20-year-old southwestern Illinois man accused in a fatal shooting has been sentenced to 26 years in prison.

Darran Perkins of Cahokia pleaded guilty Feb. 18 to first-degree murder in the shooting death of Sharmon Johnson. He admitted to shooting Johnson multiple times in the back and neck on Feb. 8, 2014.

Perkins was initially charged with armed violence, aggravated battery and attempted murder. The charges were amended to first-degree murder when Johnson died of his wounds.

He was sentenced Wednesday by St. Clair County Chief Judge John Baricevic.
