WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - The Warwick School Committee has voted to hire a lawyer to investigate how Superintendent Richard D’Agostino and other school officials dealt with accusations against a teacher suspected of child abuse.

School Committee member Karen Bachus tells WJAR-TV they want to make sure that proper procedures were followed and children were safe.

Mario Atoyan, a science teacher at Gorton Junior High School, was charged last month with sexually assaulting of a 15-year-old relative last June. He has also been accused inappropriate behavior with students.

D’Agostino initially put Atoyan on paid leave before the School Committee voted to suspend him without pay.
