MADRID (AP) - Villarreal goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will likely be sidelined for seven months, the club said on Thursday.

Asenjo, who was injured during his team’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, will require surgery.

Shortly after Fernando Torres beat two defenders and Asenjo to score the only goal, the 25-year-old goalkeeper’s knee buckled and he had to be substituted.

The club wished Asenjo “a speedy and successful recovery.”

Asenjo received encouragement from fellow Spaniards and goalkeepers at Manchester United.

“You’ve always got back on your feet again and overcome obstacles,” David De Gea tweeted. “I’m sure you’ll be back!”

Victor Valdes added on Twitter: “You are always an example of perseverance and sacrifice. You’ll bounce back to win this battle! You are the strongest of all Sergio.”
