SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Lawyers for a man accused in a fatal hammer attack will decide in June whether to ask for a mental health evaluation in the case.

Gerardo E. Perez appeared in a Salt Lake City courtroom Monday. He is being held on $1.5 million bail.

Police say the 19-year-old had been wandering the neighborhood just before the random attack, making noises that witnesses described as zombie-like.

Authorities say 68-year-old victim Leslie Beus died in a hospital after he was hit on the head outside his West Valley City home Jan. 28.

Charging documents say Beus tried to escape, but Perez followed him inside his home, saying he wanted to kill him.

Perez was arrested shortly after the attack and charged with aggravated murder after the man’s death. He is due back in court June 8.
