PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 21-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of a woman found shot to death in a car near a Providence elementary school last week.

Police announced Monday they had arrested Derell Johnson. He was arraigned in Rhode Island District Court and held without bail. It’s not known if he has a lawyer who could comment.

Police say 21-year-old Briana Giorgio of Cranston was found inside the car outside Webster Avenue Elementary School on April 1 and later pronounced dead.

Police have said they believe Giorgio was driving when she was shot at close range by someone inside the vehicle.

Giorgio’s death was the second homicide in the city this year, and the second killing in two days last week.
