EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (AP) - Authorities say a man who was shot and wounded by an Eau Claire police officer last week was unarmed.

Police say Tyler Holte (HOHL’-tee) was shot during a confrontation with officers on Wednesday.

The day before the shooting, a family member asked police to check on Holte, saying he was suicidal. Holte also was wanted on a felony arrest warrant. But police couldn’t find him.

On Wednesday, police again were looking for Holte when they say he stole a car and sped away. Officers found the car abandoned in a VFW parking lot and found Holte hiding in a wooded area.

Officer Hunter Braatz shot and wounded Holte. An Eau Claire police spokesman says Holte remained hospitalized Monday.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating. Braatz remains on administrative duty.
