SPRINGFIELD, S.D. (AP) - Officials say that fundraising on the Springfield Veterans Memorial in far southeastern South Dakota is going better than expected.

The Daily Press and Dakotan reports (https://bit.ly/1GgnF6m) that the committee is within $8,000 of its original $156,000 target. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Memorial Day.

The gray granite spire will stand 22 feet tall with a lighted top that will be visible from several miles away. The names of area veterans will be etched into granite panels.

Officials say they have about 1,400 names that have been submitted for the memorial, which is open to all honorable discharged veterans with ties to the Springfield area.
