ST. ALBANS, Vt. (AP) - J.C. Penney, the last remaining department store in downtown St. Albans, has closed after 87 years.

The St. Albans Messenger reports (https://bit.ly/1xzF5Vo) the store closed Saturday. The fate of its 30 employees wasn’t immediately known.

The retail chain has been struggling. Last year, it closed 33 underperforming stores and laid off 2,000 employees.
