DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Some Des Moines families hunted for something a little less sweet than the bite-sized candies usually sought on Easter weekend - trash.

The Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/1aBbnby ) reports that more than 100 people gathered Saturday to pick up litter from trails, creeks and woods as part of a cleanup held by the Des Moines Park and Recreation Department.

Some parents say the event was a chance to let their children learn more about the environment and altruism.

Most people filled several bags with bottles, cans and wrappers, while some found less innocent trash, including a meth lab that Des Moines police handled.

People who brought back trash were able to redeem their findings for various prizes like gift cards to a coffee shop and book store.
