WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a missing 2-year-old boy found in a pond near his home over the weekend drowned.

Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputy Andy Bivens said Monday that the preliminary coroner’s ruling lists drowning as LeRoy Toppins’ cause of death.

The child’s body was pulled from a pond Saturday near his family’s home after hundreds of people had turned out to search for him.

Fayette County Sheriff Vernon Stanforth said there was no indication of foul play. He said authorities believe the child just wandered away and fell into the pond.

Stanforth says the boy was playing outside with family members nearby when he disappeared around 6 p.m. Friday.

Numerous fire and police agencies and volunteers searched for the boy. Divers checked waterways while others searched on foot, horseback and all-terrain vehicles.
