SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police say they’re investigating a mother for filing a false police report after she claimed a distant relative drove off with her 3-month-old baby Tuesday.

Unified Police say that the mother left the child with the female relative in a car earlier, and when she didn’t return the woman drove away to run errands.

Lt. Justin Hoyal says it’s not clear why the mother called police.

The mother initially reported the relative drove off with the baby during a stop at a McDonald’s restaurant.

Police found the car in South Salt Lake about an hour later, but video surveillance and other evidence showed that the mother had left the relative with the baby.

The mother was arrested on unrelated warrants, and the relative was released from police custody.
