DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A West Des Moines man says his brother, who called for immigration reform before being deported to Mexico in September, has been killed.
Leonardo Morales on Tuesday told The Associated Press that Constantino Morales was shot and killed Sunday night in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Details about the shooting weren’t available.
The Iowa branch of the activist group Citizens for Community Improvement says Constantino Morales joined the organization in 2011. The nonprofit says Morales, a former police officer in Mexico, sought asylum after appearing in immigration court for living in the U.S. illegally. His application was denied in February 2014, prompting his deportation.
Leonardo Morales says his brother would be alive if he hadn’t been deported.
A vigil is planned April 12 at Des Moines’ Trinity United Methodist Church.
