WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) - A former Waterloo high school coach has been sentenced to a year in a Waterloo halfway house and two years of probation for having a sexual relationship with a student.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1Dfne9K ) that 32-year-old Daniel Ankrum apologized Monday for his crime. He’d pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual exploitation by a school employee.

Investigators say he had sexual contact with the 16-year-old student from January to March 2014. She wasn’t a pupil of his.

Ankrum was hired as a family and consumer science teacher in 2013 and was head coach for the East High girls cross-country team and assistant girls track coach.

His attorney says Ankrum is working as a chef and plans to attend college.
