British Prime Minister David Cameron has become the subject of online ridicule after he was caught eating a hot dog with a knife and fork while attempting to connect with ordinary voters at a barbecue.

Mr. Cameron attended an Easter barbecue in Dorset, southern England, when he was photographed taking the Mr. Pitt approach to America’s favorite outdoor snack, NBC News reported.

David Cameron eats hot dog with ketchup, to show he’s in touch with ordinary folk — blows it by using a knife & fork,” was typical of the comments on Twitter Tuesday, 30 days ahead of Britain’s general election, NBC News reported.

“What kind of monster eats a hot dog with a knife and fork?” asked another.

“Pfffhahahhaa, David Cameron eating a hot dog with a knife and fork. Silver service only for the privileged!” wrote another.

NBC News said the awkward moment was reminiscent of when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth I ate their first hot dogs during a 1939 royal visit to President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New York home. “The baffled queen chose a knife and fork despite Roosevelt’s suggestion that she use her hands to eat,” NBC News reported.

During a visit to the U.S. back in 2012, the Daily Mail reported that the “posh” Mr. Cameron “struggled to eat a hot dog without silver service” while eating with President Obama at a basketball game.
